Cherokee County Authorities Respond to Fatal Shooting in Hanging Dog Community

CHEROKEE COUNTY, NC — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has released details regarding a fatal incident that occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in the Hanging Dog community.

Details of the Incident Deputies were dispatched to the scene following reports of a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, they found bystanders already attempting to render life-saving aid to the victim.

The Victim: Authorities identified the man as 50-year-old Joseph A. Kieffer, a resident of Louisiana.

The Investigation: Investigators quickly determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Despite the efforts of bystanders and emergency personnel, Mr. Kieffer succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

No Charges: The Sheriff’s Office stated that, based on the evidence collected at the scene, no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the death.
