Bali Police Arrest Suspect in Ukrainian Kidnapping Case; Forensic Tests Awaited on Human Remains
DENPASAR, BALI — Bali Regional Police have officially named seven suspects in the violent kidnapping of 28-year-old Ukrainian tourist Igor Komarov. The case, which involves allegations of torture and a staggering $10 million ransom demand, moved into a critical phase following the arrest of a key accomplice and the discovery of mutilated human body parts in Gianyar.
The Investigation and Arrests A joint task force tracked the suspects using GPS data from a rented Toyota Avanza and CCTV footage.
The Accomplice: A Ukrainian citizen identified as CH (or suspect "C") was arrested in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on February 23rd. He is accused of providing the getaway vehicles using forged documents and a false passport.
The Fugitives: Six other foreign nationals—identified as RM, BK, AS, VN, SM, and DH—have been placed on the Wanted List (DPO). While four are believed to have already fled Indonesia via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, two are thought to still be in or around Bali.
The Crime Scene: Investigators traced the rented vehicle to a villa in Tabanan, where they believe the victim was held. Forensic teams discovered bloodstains inside the villa and the car that matched the victim's DNA.
The Ransom Video The case gained international attention after a disturbing video of Komarov surfaced online. In the footage, he appeared badly beaten and pleaded with his parents to pay a $10 million debt, claiming his captors had already severed portions of his fingers. The video also contained admissions regarding involvement in a "scamming" business, suggesting the kidnapping may be linked to Eastern European crime syndicates or cryptocurrency fraud.
Discovery of Human Remains The most grim development occurred on February 26th, when fragments of a human body were found near the Wos River estuary in Gianyar.
Identification Pending: While the remains have not been officially confirmed as Komarov, investigators noted specific physical characteristics, including a tattoo of the Virgin Mary and a Roman numeral clock, that match known descriptions.
Forensic Status: Senior Commissioner Ariasandy stated that DNA matching with the victim's parents is currently underway to provide a definitive identification.
International Coordination Bali Police have coordinated with Interpol to issue Red Notices for the fleeing suspects. The investigation is also probing the victim's potential ties to financial fraud networks, which may have served as the motive for the high-value ransom demand.
"We cannot confirm the link to the remains until forensic results are released," Commissioner Ariasandy emphasized. "Our focus remains on capturing the remaining suspects and bringing clarity to this complex case."
