Cumbria Man Jailed for 14 Years After "Pure Hell" Ordeal of Captivity and Violence

CARLISLE, UK — A 22-year-old man described by a judge as having "entrenched criminal tendencies" has been handed a lengthy prison sentence for a series of violent and predatory crimes. Noah Hetherington, formerly of Cumbria, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of rape, false imprisonment, assault, and possession of an imitation firearm.

The court heard harrowing testimony regarding a weekend in which Hetherington took "complete control" over his victim, subjecting her to what she described as "pure hell."

Details of the Ordeal The prosecution detailed a weekend of systematic abuse and terror. The victim testified that she genuinely believed she would be killed during the encounter.

Violence and Intimidation: Hetherington used an imitation shotgun to threaten the woman’s life and struck her with an axe handle.

Isolation: To prevent her from seeking help, Hetherington removed the SIM card from her mobile phone.

Repeated Assaults: The victim was raped multiple times during the period of captivity.

Victim Impact and Bravery In a powerful victim impact statement, the woman shared the lasting trauma the ordeal has inflicted on her life, noting that she has struggled with her physical and mental health, including hair loss and the inability to eat or sleep.

"I’ve been traumatised," she told the court. "And I’ll live with the trauma every single day." Despite her suffering, she stated that her motivation for testifying was to protect other women: "He needs to be stopped... I'm trying to be strong and get through it—for other people, for other girls."

The Court’s Ruling Judge Nicholas Barker noted Hetherington’s significant criminal history, which includes previous convictions for battery, weapons possession, and drug offenses.

In addition to the 14-year custodial sentence, Hetherington has been ordered to:
