HOUSTON, TX — Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, the 13-year-old boy whose mission to become an honorary law enforcement officer inspired millions, has passed away following a long and courageous battle with brain and spinal cancer.
DJ became a household name across the United States for his infectious smile, his sharp wit, and his relentless determination to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Despite being diagnosed in 2018 with anaplastic ependymoma and given only months to live, DJ defied the odds for years, spending his time visiting police departments and sheriff's offices nationwide.
A Legacy of Service and Smiles DJ’s journey was fueled by a childhood dream to join law enforcement, a passion sparked after officers helped his family during Hurricane Harvey.
Over 1,000 Badges: DJ set out with a goal to be sworn in by 100 agencies; he eventually surpassed 1,000, including being honored at the Texas State Capitol and by federal agencies like ICE and Border Patrol.
Presidential Recognition: In early 2025, DJ was a guest of honor during the Joint Address to Congress, where he was recognized for his bravery and spirit.
Spreading Joy: Known for his "corny jokes" and "real hugs," DJ’s father, Theodis Daniel, often remarked that while the cancer changed DJ’s body, it never touched his soul or his sense of humor.
